Gilbert's lyrics from the Savoy operas, lifted out of their scores and printed as verse. "The Modern Major-General" is here, and "The Policeman's Lot", "The House of Peers", "They'll None of 'Em be Missed", "The Heavy Dragoon", "The Disagreeable Man", "The Highly Respectable Gondolier", "The Working Monarch", "Braid the Raven Hair", "Is Life a Boon", "The Rover's Apology" and some sixty more — the patter songs, the sentimental numbers and the choruses, each standing on its own rhyme and metre without the music.

W. S. Gilbert published Songs of a Savoyard in 1890, with his own drawings, in the middle of the partnership with Arthur Sullivan and at the moment the two of them had fallen out badly over the cost of a carpet. The selection is his own, and it is a fair statement of which of his lyrics he thought would survive the tunes.

This Bibliomancer edition presents the songs complete.
