A Bibliomancer reading sequence

Classics under 200 pages

Length is not seriousness. Some of the most concentrated books in the language are short: a novella written in a week, a set of private notebooks, an account of a life that had to be told plainly and fast. This list gathers the Bibliomancer editions that run to fewer than two hundred pages in our print setting — books you can begin after dinner and finish before the weekend is out.

The page counts here are real: they are the counts of our own typeset editions (5.5 × 8.5 inches, a comfortable 10.5-point Garamond), not a publisher’s estimate. A reading-time estimate appears on every book page, based on an average adult reading speed, so you know what you are taking on.

Short does not mean slight. Heart of Darkness and The Great Gatsby are among the most discussed works of the twentieth century; Marcus Aurelius wrote his Meditations for nobody but himself; Frederick Douglass’s Narrative changed the argument about slavery in America. Each is complete, free to read online, and available in print.
