John Marcher has spent his life convinced that some rare, momentous fate — for good or terrible — is waiting to spring on him, a conviction he confides only to May Bartram, who quietly shares the long vigil with him for years, until Marcher finally understands, too late, what the waiting itself cost him.

Henry James published "The Beast in the Jungle" in 1903, among the best known of his later, more introspective short fiction, and often read as his own most direct statement on a life not fully lived.
