Fiction · 1908
Anne of Green Gables
Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, an elderly brother and sister on a Prince Edward Island farm, send for an orphan boy to help with the work; the orphanage sends a red-haired, talkative girl instead. L. M. Montgomery’s first novel, published in 1908, was an immediate success and has remained one of the most read books in Canadian literature.
Anne Shirley’s imagination, temper and ambition, and the slow thawing of Marilla, are the book’s whole subject; there is no villain and hardly any plot. The island landscape, which Montgomery knew from childhood, is drawn with exactness.
The thirty-eight chapters are given complete, from the day the train comes in to the bend in the road.
