Winesburg, Ohio
A Group of Tales of Ohio Small Town Life
Twenty-two linked stories about the people of a small Ohio town — the doctor, the teacher, the minister at his window, the woman who never got away — gathered around the young reporter George Willard, who listens to all of them and then takes the morning train out. The opening piece, The Book of the Grotesque, explains what the others are for.
Sherwood Anderson published the book in 1919, after walking out of the paint business he ran in Elyria. Its plain sentences and its subject — the private life of ordinary people in a place with no room for it — changed American prose; Hemingway and Faulkner both said they had learned from him.
Bibliomancer presents all the stories complete.
