Sherwood Anderson

1876–1941

Sherwood Anderson (1876–1941) was born at Camden, Ohio, and had made himself a paint manufacturer in Elyria before walking out of the business in 1912 and going to Chicago to write. Winesburg, Ohio (1919) established him; The Triumph of the Egg (1921), Horses and Men (1923) and Dark Laughter (1925) followed. He encouraged both Hemingway and Faulkner early on, and his plain, spoken sentences left a mark on each of them.
