The Crystal Stopper
Maurice Leblanc · translated by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos
A burglary at a deputy's villa goes wrong: two of Arsène Lupin's men are taken, one of them the boy Gilbert, and both are sentenced to the guillotine. Lupin, who has never lost a man before, sets out to save them, and finds that the only lever is a scrap of paper the deputy Daubrecq is using to blackmail half the French government — the list of twenty-seven names from a canal-company scandal. Daubrecq keeps it somewhere nobody can find, and the search for it runs through the whole book while the appeal is refused and the date is set.
Maurice Leblanc published Le Bouchon de cristal in 1912. It is among the darkest of the Lupin novels, with a political scandal for a plot and a clock running through it. This edition is Alexander Teixeira de Mattos's English translation.
