Alexander Teixeira de Mattos

1865–1921

Alexander Teixeira de Mattos (1865–1921) was born in Amsterdam into a Sephardic Jewish family and settled in England as a young man, where he worked as a journalist and then as one of the busiest translators of his day. He put into English the plays and essays of Maeterlinck, the insect studies of J. H. Fabre, the novels of Louis Couperus, and, in 1911, Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera.
