Sense and Sensibility
Two sisters, left with their mother in reduced circumstances after their father’s death, face the marriage market of Regency England with opposite temperaments: Elinor governs her feelings; Marianne lives by them. Jane Austen’s first published novel appeared in 1811 “By a Lady”, at the author’s own financial risk; it sold out its first edition.
The book is the first of her comedies of money and manners, and already shows the exactness of dialogue and the moral seriousness beneath the wit that mark all her work.
