Persuasion
Eight years before the novel opens, Anne Elliot was persuaded to break her engagement to a young naval officer with no fortune. Now he has returned from the wars a captain and a rich man, and she must meet him again in the small world of her family and their acquaintance.
Jane Austen finished Persuasion in 1816, the year before her death; it was published posthumously with Northanger Abbey in December 1817. Shorter and quieter than her earlier books, with an autumnal setting and a heroine past first youth, it is for many readers the most moving of the six.
