Mansfield Park
Fanny Price, poor relation, is taken at ten into the household of her uncle Sir Thomas Bertram at Mansfield Park, and grows up there in the shadow of her cousins. When the worldly Crawfords arrive from London, the quiet order of the house is tested — by private theatricals, by flirtation, by a proposal Fanny will not accept.
Jane Austen’s third published novel appeared in 1814. It is the most serious of the six and the most argued over: readers have disagreed for two centuries about its heroine and its moral.
