Grimms' Fairy Tales
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were philologists, not entertainers: they set out to record the household tales of the German-speaking lands before they were lost. The first volume of their Kinder- und Hausmärchen appeared in 1812 and the second in 1815, and Wilhelm went on revising, softening and shaping them through six further editions until 1857.
Here are Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, the Frog-Prince, Little Red-Cap, Snowdrop, Ashputtel, Briar Rose, the Valiant Little Tailor, the Elves and the Shoemaker and the Golden Goose — together with a good many tales stranger, funnier and more brutal than the ones everybody knows.
The English text belongs to the Taylor tradition: the translation first published in 1823, which gave these stories the names they still carry in English — Snowdrop, Ashputtel, Briar Rose. It is a selection and not the whole of the German collection, and it is given here entire.
