Wilhelm Grimm

1786–1859

Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859) was born at Hanau and worked all his life beside his elder brother Jacob, as librarian, professor and scholar. After the first edition he took the leading hand in the fairy tales, editing, smoothing and lengthening them through the revisions that ran to 1857 and giving the collection the tone by which it is known. He also published Die deutsche Heldensage (1829). He shared Jacob’s dismissal from Göttingen in 1837 and his later years in Berlin.
