The Song of the Cardinal
The Song of the Cardinal follows a single cardinal bird through a year in an Indiana wetland — his fierce rivalry with another male over territory, his courtship of a mate, and their struggle to raise a brood against storms, predators and the general danger of nesting in the wild — narrated with the same close, patient naturalist's attention Gene Stratton-Porter brought to her novels of the Limberlost.
Stratton-Porter published The Song of the Cardinal in 1903, her first book, before Freckles and the other Limberlost novels made her a bestselling novelist; she illustrated it with her own photographs of the actual birds she'd spent years observing.
Bibliomancer publishes the 1903 text exactly as Gene Stratton-Porter wrote it.
