The Rise of Silas Lapham
Silas Lapham, a self-made Vermont paint manufacturer, has grown rich enough to build a new house on Boston's fashionable Back Bay and marry his daughter into the old-money Corey family — until a series of bad business decisions and one crucial moral choice threaten to cost him everything he has built.
William Dean Howells serialized the novel in Century Magazine through 1884 and 1885, publishing it in book form in 1885; it is considered one of the first major works of American literary realism.
Bibliomancer restores the 1885 text exactly as Howells wrote it.
