Richard Harding Davis

Richard Harding Davis (1864–1916) was born in Philadelphia and became the best-known American reporter of his generation, covering the Spanish-American War (where he joined the charge up San Juan Hill), the Boer War, the Russo-Japanese War and the First World War. His early fiction — including the Van Bibber stories and Gallegher and Other Stories (1891) — made him a celebrity in his twenties; Van Bibber and Others (1892), Soldiers of Fortune (1897) and several successful plays followed. He died at his home in Mount Kisco, New York.
