About the author
1867–1911 · Victorian
David Graham Phillips (1867–1911) was an American journalist and novelist from Madison, Indiana, who worked as a reporter for the New York Sun and then the New York World before turning to muckraking and fiction full-time. His 1906 magazine series "The Treason of the Senate," exposing corrupt ties between senators and business interests, helped drive the constitutional amendment for the direct election of senators; his novels, including Susan Lenox: Her Fall and Rise and The Conflict, applied the same reforming instinct to American capitalism, politics and the position of women. He was shot and killed outside his New York apartment in January 1911 by a delusional stalker who believed a Phillips novel had libeled his family.
