The Market-Place
Joel Thorpe returns from years abroad with almost nothing, cooks up a scheme to corner the market on a rubber-trading company nobody else has noticed yet, and spends the novel finding out what a sudden, enormous fortune actually does to a man's sense of who he is — and what everyone around him, from his own family to London society, is suddenly willing to overlook about how he got it.
Harold Frederic died in 1898, shortly before The Market-Place was published in 1899; it was his last novel and, at the time, his most commercially successful.
Bibliomancer publishes the 1899 text exactly as Harold Frederic wrote it.
