Professor Phaeton Featherwit, a scientist of great confidence and moderate judgement, has built a flying machine, and takes his two nephews up in it to observe a tornado from the inside. They come down a long way from anywhere, in a hidden valley behind the mountains, where a city of Aztecs has gone on existing since the conquest — sun-worship, human sacrifice and all — without ever learning that the outside world exists. The Aztecs take the air-ship for a sign, and the three of them have to decide what to be.

Joseph E. Badger, Jr. wrote a great many dime novels and boys' adventure stories, and published The Lost City in 1898. It belongs to the lost-race genre that ran from Haggard's She through a hundred American imitations, and it is a clear, uncomplicated example of the form.
