The American volume of Julian Hawthorne's ten-part anthology of mystery and detection. Poe supplies "The Gold-Bug" and "The Oblong Box"; Washington Irving "Wolfert Webber, or Golden Dreams" and the "Adventure of the Black Fisherman"; Ambrose Bierce "The Man and the Snake" and "An Heiress from Redhorse"; Mary E. Wilkins Freeman "The Shadows on the Wall"; F. Marion Crawford "By the Waters of Paradise"; Melville Davisson Post "The Corpus Delicti", in which a lawyer explains how to commit an unprosecutable murder; Fitz-James O'Brien "The Golden Ingot"; and Charles Brockden Brown the madness of Wieland, extracted from the 1798 novel. Hawthorne's introduction, on the "riddle story" and how it works, opens the book.

The Lock and Key Library was published by the Review of Reviews Company of New York in 1909, sorted by nation and period. This is the American one, and it amounts to a genealogy of the form in the United States from Brockden Brown to the writers of Hawthorne's own day.

This Bibliomancer edition presents the introduction and all the stories complete.
