Rena Walden, light-skinned enough to pass as white, leaves her Black family and community behind at her brother John's urging to seek a new life and a white husband, George Tryon — until Tryon discovers her ancestry and the engagement collapses, sending Rena back toward the world, and the man, she had left behind.

Charles W. Chesnutt, one of the first African American writers to achieve major literary recognition, published the novel in 1900 through Houghton, Mifflin and Company.

Bibliomancer restores the 1900 text exactly as Chesnutt wrote it.
