Old Indian Legends
Old Indian Legends retells fourteen traditional Dakota stories — trickster tales of Iktomi the spider, origin stories, and cautionary fables — the same stories Zitkala-Ša had been told as a child on the Yankton Sioux reservation, written down in English for children who would otherwise never hear them at all.
Zitkala-Ša, born Gertrude Simmons on the Yankton Sioux Reservation and later a writer, violinist and political activist for Native rights, published Old Indian Legends in 1901, early in a career that also produced American Indian Stories and the co-written opera The Sun Dance; she later served as president of the National Council of American Indians.
Bibliomancer publishes the 1901 text exactly as Zitkala-Ša wrote it.
