Looking Backward, 2000 to 1887
Julian West, a wealthy Bostonian, falls into a mesmeric sleep in 1887 and wakes up in the year 2000 to find Boston transformed into a socialist utopia, where private industry has given way to a single national syndicate, everyone retires with a full pension at forty-five, and want and crime have both been engineered out of existence — described to him, chapter by chapter, by his host Dr. Leete.
Edward Bellamy published the novel in 1888; it became one of the best-selling American novels of the nineteenth century and inspired a real political movement, the Nationalist Clubs, organized around its ideas.
Bibliomancer restores the 1888 text exactly as Bellamy wrote it.
