Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

A Cambridge don finds a scrap of parchment tucked inside an old sketchbook and unwittingly summons the crouching, hairy thing pictured on it. A professor on a golfing holiday digs an ancient whistle out of coastal ruins, blows it to see what happens, and spends the night listening to something crumple the sheets of the empty bed across his room. Across eight stories, James sends antiquarians and manuscript-hunters into libraries, churchyards, and country houses where old paper is never merely old.

Published in 1904, these were stories James first read aloud to friends by candlelight at King's College, Cambridge, before he ever collected them into a book. A medieval scholar and manuscript expert by trade, he built the danger in these stories out of a specialist's own curiosity.
