Lydia Maria Child
1802–1880
Lydia Maria Child (1802–1880), of Massachusetts, was a novelist (Hobomok, 1824), the author of the best-selling The Frugal Housewife, editor of the National Anti-Slavery Standard, and from An Appeal in Favor of That Class of Americans Called Africans (1833) one of the most effective abolitionist writers. She edited Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl for its 1861 publication.
