Constance Garnett
1861–1946
Constance Garnett (1861–1946), born Constance Black in Brighton, studied classics at Newnham College, Cambridge, and learned Russian in the 1890s. Over some forty years she translated about seventy volumes of Russian literature — Turgenev, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Chekhov, Gogol, Herzen — and for generations of English readers her versions were the Russian novel. Her translations of Dostoyevsky appeared between 1912 and 1920.
