Two stories run side by side: Anna, married to a senior official, who leaves husband and son for Count Vronsky; and Levin, a landowner who wants to farm, to marry Kitty Shcherbatsky and to understand how to live. Leo Tolstoy published the novel in instalments in the Russian Messenger from 1875 and finished it in 1877.

He thought of it as his first true novel, and it is the most exactly built of his books: eight parts, two marriages, and a structure in which almost every scene in one story answers a scene in the other. The famous first sentence sets the terms; the last two hundred pages take them apart.

This edition uses Constance Garnett’s translation of 1901. Because of its length it is issued in two matching volumes.
