Charles William Eliot
1834–1926
Charles William Eliot (1834–1926) was president of Harvard for forty years (1869–1909), the reformer who made the elective system and the modern research university American commonplaces. In retirement he chose and introduced the fifty volumes of the Harvard Classics (1909–10), the “five-foot shelf”, from which this text of Franklin’s Autobiography is taken.
