Benjamin Jowett
1817–1893
Benjamin Jowett (1817–1893) was Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford and, from 1870, Master of Balliol College, one of the most influential teachers of Victorian England. His translation of the Dialogues of Plato (1871, revised 1875 and 1892) made Plato available to English readers and was the standard version for a century; he also translated Thucydides and Aristotle’s Politics.
