1884–1924
Hugh G. Evelyn-White (1884–1924) was born in Ipswich and took a degree in classics from Wadham College, Oxford, in 1907. From 1909, apart from service during the First World War, he worked as the Greco-Roman specialist on the Metropolitan Museum of New York's annual excavations in Egypt, and in 1922 took part in the early work on the tomb of Tutankhamun. His edition and translation of Hesiod, the Homeric Hymns, and Homerica for the Loeb Classical Library (1914) remained the standard English version for decades. He was lecturing at the University of Leeds when he took his own life in 1924, at forty.
