Samuel Moore

1838–1911

Samuel Moore (1838–1911) was an English lawyer, a friend of Marx and Engels from the 1860s and a fellow member of the First International, who later served as a magistrate and colonial administrator in Nigeria. At the family's own encouragement he produced the first English translation of Marx's Capital, Volume I (1887, with Edward Aveling, revised by Engels) and, the following year, the only translation of The Communist Manifesto ever personally authorized by Engels, who reviewed and annotated it before publication.
