Three friends and a fox terrier named Montmorency take a rowing boat up the Thames from Kingston to Oxford, for their health. Jerome K. Jerome published the book in 1889; it was meant as a guide to the river and became, against his intentions, one of the most durable comic novels in the language.

The guidebook survives inside it — locks, inns, weirs, the history of every reach — but it is constantly interrupted: by the tin of pineapple that cannot be opened, by Uncle Podger hanging a picture, by the packing, the towing and the smell of the cheeses. The reviewers complained about the slang; the readers did not, and the book has never been out of print.

The nineteen chapters are given complete, with Jerome’s preface.
