A short life of Jefferson organised around character rather than chronology: the Virginia upbringing and the education at William and Mary, the drafting of the Declaration, the years in France, the Secretaryship of State and the quarrel with Hamilton that produced the party system, the Presidency, the Louisiana Purchase and the embargo, and the long retirement at Monticello building the University of Virginia. Ellis is frank about the contradictions — the author of the Declaration who held slaves, the strict constructionist who bought Louisiana — and includes a selection of Jefferson's own writings and a chronology.

Edward Sylvester Ellis published the sketch in 1898. He wrote history and biography for general and school readers at great speed and in great quantity, and this belongs to a series of such lives of American statesmen.
