An inventor tells his dinner guests that he has travelled to the year 802,701 and found humanity divided into the delicate Eloi and the subterranean Morlocks — and then further still, to the last days of the Earth. H. G. Wells’s first novel appeared in 1895 and established the time machine as a device of fiction.
Short, swift and bleak, the book is both a scientific romance and a social argument about where the divisions of Wells’s own age might lead.
