The Three Musketeers
In 1625 a young Gascon named d’Artagnan rides into Paris with a letter of introduction, a yellow horse and a gift for being challenged to duels. Within a day he has made enemies of the Cardinal’s guards and friends of three musketeers of the King — Athos, Porthos and Aramis — and within a month he is carrying the Queen’s honour across the Channel and back, with Richelieu’s agent Milady ahead of him at every stage.
Dumas serialised the novel in Le Siècle in 1844, taking his hero from the memoirs of the real d’Artagnan and working, as usual, with Auguste Maquet. Twenty Years After and The Vicomte de Bragelonne followed; the four friends and their motto long ago outgrew all three books.
This edition uses the anonymous English translation of 1846. Bibliomancer presents the complete text.
