In the summer of 1757, with France and Britain fighting for North America, two sisters travelling to their father at Fort William Henry are led into the forest by a guide who means to betray them, and taken up by the scout known as Hawkeye and his companions Chingachgook and Uncas, the last two of their people.

James Fenimore Cooper published the novel in 1826, the second written of the five Leatherstocking Tales. It is the most read of them and the book that gave American fiction its first lasting frontier hero — as well as a portrait of Native peoples that later readers have had good reason to argue with.
