Forty-odd poems for and about small children, by the newspaperman who invented the modern American nursery poem. "The Duel" sets the gingham dog against the calico cat and disposes of both; "Jest 'Fore Christmas" is the confession of a boy going temporarily straight for commercial reasons; "Seein' Things" describes what comes out of the dark at bedtime; "The Dinkey Bird", "The Fly-Away Horse", "The Shut-Eye Train" and "The Rock-a-By Lady" take the same child off to sleep. Several — "The Dead Babe", "Inscription for My Little Son's Silver Plate" — are not comic at all, and Field, who lost children of his own, put them in deliberately.

Eugene Field wrote a daily column for the Chicago Daily News and published Love-Songs of Childhood in 1894, the year before his death at forty-five.

This Bibliomancer edition presents the poems complete.
