Willa Cather

1873–1947

Willa Cather (1873–1947) was born in Virginia and taken at nine to the Nebraska prairie, whose immigrant farming communities became her subject. After the University of Nebraska she worked as a journalist and teacher in Pittsburgh, then edited McClure’s Magazine in New York. Her novels include O Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark (1915), My Ántonia (1918), One of Ours (1922), which won the Pulitzer Prize, and Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927).
