Samuel Laing (1780–1868) was a Scottish traveler, writer, and translator who served in the Peninsular War and farmed in Orkney before turning to travel writing about Scandinavia. His 1844 English translation of Snorri Sturluson's Heimskringla, the fruit of years of travel and study in Norway and Sweden, was the first to bring the Norse kings' sagas to a wide English readership.
