Ludvig Sandöe Ipsen

Ludvig Sandöe Ipsen (1840–1920) was a Danish-born designer who settled in Boston and decorated books, bindings and title pages for the city’s publishers over some forty years. The 1878 Osgood edition of The Scarlet Letter, from which this text is taken, credits its decorations to him and its illustrations to Mary Hallock Foote.
