John Ormsby
1829–1895
John Ormsby (1829–1895) was born in what is now County Offaly and educated at Trinity College Dublin. Called to the bar, he lived instead by writing: travel, in Autumn Rambles in North Africa (1864), and translation. A keen alpinist and early member of the Alpine Club, he translated the Poem of the Cid (1879) and, in 1885, Don Quixote — an unabridged version with a long introduction and notes that has been reprinted ever since.
