George M. Towle
1841–1893
George Makepeace Towle (1841–1893) was born in Washington, D.C., studied at Yale and Harvard Law School, and served as United States consul at Nantes and then at Bradford. Returning to Boston, he worked as a journalist and editor and wrote popular histories and biographies. His English translation of Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days appeared in 1873.
