Elizabeth Cady Stanton
1815–1902
Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815–1902) was born in Johnstown, New York, the daughter of a judge whose law office she haunted as a girl, poring over the statutes that stripped married women of their property and rights. She organized the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention and wrote its Declaration of Sentiments, and in 1869 co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association with Susan B. Anthony, her partner in the movement for half a century. Stanton also wrote the controversial two-part Woman's Bible (1895–98) and the autobiography Eighty Years and More (1898). She died in New York City at eighty-six.
