Baroness Orczy (1865–1947), born Emma Magdolna Rozália Orczy at Tarnaörs in Hungary, was the daughter of Baron Félix Orczy, a landowner and composer. The family left for Brussels, Paris and finally London, where she trained as a painter and married the illustrator Montagu Barstow. The Scarlet Pimpernel began as a play staged in 1903 and appeared as a novel in 1905; more than a dozen sequels followed, along with the detective stories of “The Old Man in the Corner”.
