Holman Day

1865–1935

Holman Day (1865–1935) was born in Vassalboro, Maine, and graduated from Colby College in 1887. He spent years as a Maine newspaperman, editing the Dexter Gazette and later serving as managing editor of the Lewiston Daily Sun, before turning fully to fiction. He drew on the state's lumber camps and coastal towns for King Spruce (1908), Blow the Man Down (1916) and The Landloper (1918), and in his later years worked in Hollywood as a scenario writer, adapting his own novels for the screen. A prolific author of more than twenty-five books, he also wrote verse in Maine dialect. He died at sixty-nine in Mill Valley, California.
