Eliot Gregory

1854–1915

Eliot Gregory (1854–1915) was born in New York City, a great-nephew of James Fenimore Cooper, and after graduating from Yale in 1880 studied painting in Rome and then Paris, where he lived for much of his career and won a gold medal at the 1899 Salon. Writing under the pen name "An Idler," he published essays on American and French manners and society in magazines and collected them in Worldly Ways and Byways (1898) and The Ways of Men (1900). France made him a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1911 for his years of residence there. He died at his home in New York at sixty-one.
