Henry B. Wheatley

1838–1917

Henry B. Wheatley (1838–1917) was born in London, orphaned in infancy, and educated largely by his elder brother; from 1879 to 1909 he served as assistant secretary of the Royal Society of Arts. A prolific bibliographer and antiquary, he was a founding member of the Early English Text Society and of the Index Society, and served as president of the Bibliographical Society from 1911 to 1913. He is best remembered for his ten-volume edition of Samuel Pepys's diary (1893–99), far fuller than any that had come before it, and for the companion study Samuel Pepys and the World He Lived In (1880); his own How to Make an Index (1902) remains a standard guide to the craft. He died in London.
