Snorri Sturluson (1179–1241) was an Icelandic historian, poet, and politician, twice elected lawspeaker of the Icelandic parliament, the Althing. He wrote the Prose Edda, a handbook of Norse mythology and poetics, and Heimskringla, a history of the kings of Norway told through their sagas. Caught up in the power struggles between Iceland's leading families and the Norwegian crown, he was assassinated at his estate at Reykholt on the order of King Håkon IV.
