Stephen Vincent Benét

1898–1943

Stephen Vincent Benét (1898–1943) was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, into an Army family, and published his first poetry collection, Young Adventure, in 1918 at twenty. He is best remembered for John Brown's Body (1928), a book-length narrative poem on the Civil War that won the Pulitzer Prize, and for the widely anthologized short story "The Devil and Daniel Webster" (1936); a second Pulitzer, for the poem Western Star, was awarded after his death. He died in New York City at forty-four.
