James Rhoades

1841–1923

James Rhoades (1841–1923) was born in Clonmel, Ireland, and educated at Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He taught at Haileybury and Sherborne before devoting himself to poetry and translation, publishing his own verse alongside blank-verse translations of Virgil’s Georgics (1881) and Aeneid (1893). His poem “Out of the Silence” was later anthologized in the Oxford Book of English Mystical Verse (1917).
